Life after five kids (and 5 grandchildren) can feel like a continuous whirlwind of chaos and joy, often leaving little room for self-care. I nearly gave up on reclaiming the confidence I once had in my body, especially as I entered menopause. However, through perseverance and the adoption of specific daily habits, I proudly transformed both my body and mindset.
In this post, I’m eager to share my journey, the daily rituals that helped me regain the energy needed to change, and how I continued nurturing these habits during menopause.
Finding My Motivation
After welcoming my fifth child at the ripe old age of 41, my body felt like a stranger. Weight gain and keeping it off became even more challenging with the onset of perimenopause and I could no longer starve myself into my jeans. Realizing that I needed motivation, I found my strongest reason in my children and my grandchildren. I wanted to be active and healthy for them, and to show them that age is just a number.
Thinking about the future I wanted pushed me to initiate significant changes in my lifestyle.
The Power of Protein
One crucial step was focusing on my diet, particularly increasing my protein intake. Research shows that protein plays a vital role in building lean muscle and reducing cravings. I started tracking my macros to become more conscious of what I consumed.
Instead of opting for empty carbs, I turned to high-protein foods like:
Chicken: A reliable source of lean protein, providing about 26 grams per 3-ounce serving.
Fish: Salmon, in particular, packs 22 grams of protein per 3-ounce serving.
Legumes: Lentils offer about 18 grams of protein per cooked cup and are packed with fiber.
Tracking my protein allowed me to support both muscle building and my body's evolving needs during menopause.
Lifting Weights, Not Just Cardio
While many women focus solely on lengthy cardio sessions, I discovered that strength training was my key to success. I incorporated early morning strength training three to five times a week, Lifting heavy weights helped me build muscle and effectively boosted my metabolism.
In fact, research indicates that strength training can increase resting metabolic rate by about 7-8%, which is helpful in maintaining weight loss. Focusing more on strength training rather than just cardio significantly improved my body composition, making me feel empowered and capable of tackling muscle loss due to aging.
Prioritizing Rest and Recovery
Navigating my fitness journey taught me the importance of rest and recovery. As a mom of five, pushing through exhaustion often hindered my progress. I learned to listen to my body. I scheduled rest days and prioritized sleep—aiming for at least 7-8 hours nightly became non-negotiable.
Quality sleep supports hormone balance, especially during menopause. Integrating calming activities like stretching and breathing exercises helped improve my physical and mental well-being. Taking time to recover meant I was investing in my long-term health.
Embracing Mindful Eating
Another transformative habit was mindful eating. By savoring each meal without distractions, I learned to recognize my body's hunger signals better.
I changed my whole relationship with food and found when I ate with purpose and enjoyed my meals it positively impacted my overall health both physically and mentally.
Staying Hydrated
Hydration is often overlooked but is crucial for weight management and overall health, especially with shifting hormones. I set a goal to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, which enhanced my energy levels, digestion, and skin health. Carrying a refillable water bottle made it much easier to stay on track.
Finding Community
Connecting with other women on a similar journey proved invaluable. Whether through support groups or health-focused classes, sharing experiences created a powerful bond.
Listening to others share their struggles and triumphs offered strength in vulnerability. Together, we celebrated milestones—whether it was losing stubborn pounds or simply feeling more energetic. This sense of community kept me motivated and reminded me that we are all in this together.
Consistency Over Perfection
The essential key to my transformation was not perfection but consistency. There were days I lacked motivation however, I learned to embrace the journey over striving for perfection.
Setting achievable goals and celebrating small victories kept my motivation alive. Remembering that progress is progress helped me stay focused and committed to my routine.
Embracing the Journey
Transforming my body after 5 babies while navigating menopause has been both challenging and rewarding. Through daily habits such as mindful eating, strength training, proper hydration, and community connections, I feel healthier and more empowered than ever.
Every woman's body is unique, and not every approach will work for everyone. However, I encourage you to take small, actionable steps aligned with your goals. Whether that's incorporating more protein, lifting weights, or finding community support, every step counts.
I hope my story inspires others to embark on their own journey of transformation. You can successfully tackle the challenges of motherhood and menopause, one habit at a time!
Lift, Laugh, Love... Live longer!
